New hyphen word for the day - "White-Hispanic"

I don’t watch much news these days, outside of financial news. Imagine my surprise this week when I flipped the channel over to CNN a few times on Tuesday and Wednesday and realized that network was doing wall-to wall-coverage of the Zimmerman trial. Really? Virtually round the clock coverage for one shooting? In the course of a week in cities like Chicago there are literally dozens of shootings and multiple deaths.

Not knowing much about this case I stayed tuned for a few minutes. Soon it became obvious that the hosts were implying there were racial considerations involved in the fight before the shooting.

What caught my attention was when the CNN hosts were using the term “White-Hispanic man” to describe Zimmerman. Say what? White-Hispanic man?

Apparently like my niece and two nephews, Zimmerman’s father is white and his mother is Hispanic. I fiddled around on Google and discovered a few things that help explain why CNN feels this case justifies wall-to-wall coverage. I also now know why their hosts felt the need to coin a new hyphen word like "White-Hispanic." 

It seems that the media wrongly reported Zimmerman as being simply "white" when the story first broke. News outlets like NBC went so far as to doctor 911 call tapes to make it look like a racially motivated white-on-black crime. Amazingly, NBC later apologized and fired people for doctoring the audio. Of course this simple misconception of Zimmerman's skin color could have easily been corrected as soon as the photo of Zimmerman with his broken nose was released. The man is brown.

The trouble with simply reporting the truth is there’s millions of dollars and huge TV ratings involved in stoking the racial angles of news stories. In America we are now allowing ourselves to be crassly manipulated. Hucksters like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton need a good exploitation story regularly whether it is true or false simply to verify their continuous "we are victim’s" narrative. And of course dozens of senseless black-on-black murders that occur every weekend in Chicago are useless tragedies in the advancing of their more narrow mission.
Even worse than the race-baiters is CNN and other media outlets who play the sorely needed propaganda dispenser role. It is deeply troubling to realize media outlets in America find it financially rewarding to divide our country into sides along racial lines for the ad revenue that comes with higher ratings. Hatred sells. It is like having Jerry Springer on every news channel.

Expect another dozen murders in Chicago between now and the end of the weekend while all the race-baiters and media whores remain silent. As a "Scotch-German-Italian man," I have to wonder what our president thinks about all of this now that he can best be identified as a "Black-White man."
