These are tough times for Libertarians. It seems there are no places to turn to as basic freedoms are being curbed in America on a regular basis. We used to count on the GOP as well as civil libertarians in the ACLU to fight side by side with us in defending the Constitution. No more. Given a choice between the Bill of Rights and advancing the cause of Marxism, the ACLU has chosen Karl.
Having been enabled by tens of millions of people who have surrendered their intellectual honesty for absurd Utopian promises, elected officials in the Democratic Party have become a caricature of every horrible villain in the Orwellian novels such as 1984 and Animal Farm. And voters loyal to Democrats, including the aforementioned ACLU types, have morphed right before our eyes. Now they are the kind of people Ayn Rand warned us about more than fifty years ago in Atlas Shrugged.
What about the Republicans? In some ways the failing of Republican leadership to protect basic liberties should make us even angrier than the more predictable sellout that has come from the political left. There is no doubt we all have pitifully naïve friends, neighbors, and family members who are woefully uninformed and/or swayed by Obama worshipping nature of pop culture. But a portion of the GOP is suddenly showing all of the signs of also having been duped into thinking that "having principles" regarding constitutionally protected freedoms is wrong. It seems the despicable public education system, the mainstream media, and the subtle influences of 21st Century fascism that are sweeping the nation, are all taking their toll on freedom. Why else would a slob like Chris Christie get away with dissing freedom-loving Americans by suggesting their most sacred philosophies regarding liberty are “dangerous?” Have another twinkie with a Kool-Aid chaser Chris.
Thanks to the seemingly unassailable voting coalition formed by radical Marxists, race baiters, entitlement seekers, ambitious bureaucrats, public unions, clueless feminists, financially illiterate journalists, and priority challenged Republicans we are required to tolerate the following:
- Warrantless spying on hundreds of millions of Americans by an unaccountable NSA
- DOJ gunrunning operations that is still leading to murders in the Southwest and in Mexico
- DOJ calls for an end to the rights guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment
- An IRS that fast tracks the status of 501-C4 organizations who are in favor of allotting more power to the IRS while improperly harassing 501-C4’s opposed to giving more power to the IRS
- An executive branch that sinply chooses which laws to follow and/or enforce. It makes things up as we go along on immigration, healthcare, welfare-work requirements, etc.
- A DOJ that confiscates the emails and phone records of journalists in the name of national security.
- A White House that cites “Executive Privilege” as an excuse for ignoring legitimate subpoenas as it derails murder investigations.
Oppressive and power-obsessed governments that willingly trample on individuals are not new. They have been around for all of human history. What used to make America unique was the way all sides could be counted on to control the reach of government in ways no other nation ever did. Democrats and Republicans (not just Libertarians) loved personal freedoms and had each other's backs. Not anymore. Basic respect for freedom in mainstream America has changed over the last few years. And not surprisingly, so has the potential for our children and grandchildren to have a better life. How sad.
